Dialysis Department

Greetings

The number of patients who must begin dialysis is increasing year by year and aging. Diabetes in particular is on the rise, and some patients are already on the brink of life-threatening complications by the time they begin dialysis. It is also our duty to provide treatment tailored to the individual needs of patients who have been undergoing dialysis for a long time and are suffering from painful complications. Furthermore, with regard to kidney transplants, which are becoming increasingly common in Japan, our hospital's staff work in collaboration with Transplant Surgery to provide comprehensive treatment for kidney failure.

Overview

Treatment details

Japan Society of Dialysis Therapy Certified Facility
Maximum simultaneous dialysis capacity: 15 beds (30 patients) within the center
Clinical engineers: 10 people
Outside the center (on-site equipment): 13 units (including plasma exchange equipment)

*As a general rule, our center provides hemodialysis and other treatments only to patients who require hospitalization.
Since our opening, we have provided inpatient treatment for approximately 6,000 patients with end-stage renal failure. Approximately 100 patients per year begin hemodialysis, and after hemodialysis is initiated, we refer them to nearby dialysis clinics for maintenance dialysis. We also provide inpatient treatment for dialysis patients with various medical and surgical complications, including shunt problems and secondary hyperparathyroidism, in collaboration with related departments, and serve as a comprehensive medical center for maintenance dialysis patients from western Kanagawa Prefecture to eastern Shizuoka Prefecture.

Main target diseases

End-stage renal failure, acute kidney injury
Dialysis complications, shunt trouble, secondary hyperparathyroidism, amyloidosis, difficult dialysis, sepsis in dialysis patients
Apheresis therapy for multiple myeloma, macroglobulinemia, myasthenia gravis, malignant rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, severe blood type incompatible pregnancy, Guillain-Barré syndrome, multiple sclerosis, pemphigus, pemphigoid, focal glomerulosclerosis, familial hypercholesterolemia, arteriosclerosis obliterans, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease.

Main medical achievements

・Kidney failure treatment

Our center has staff with extensive knowledge and experience in all lifelong treatments for patients with kidney failure, including hemodialysis, home hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplants. Doctors, nurses, clinical engineers, nutritionists, pharmacists, social workers, and others work closely together to provide comprehensive medical services.

・PEIT therapy for parathyroid adenoma, parathyroidectomy

For patients undergoing maintenance dialysis, bone and cardiovascular lesions due to secondary hyperparathyroidism are major complications. At our facility, we perform total parathyroidectomy (PTx) for patients whose condition cannot be controlled with drug therapy. We welcome consultations at our specialist outpatient clinics: Nakamura (Transplant Surgery) on Mondays, Komaba on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Nakagawa on Tuesdays. Urgent cases can also be referred to Department of Renal Endocrinology and Metabolism.

・Vascular access problems

We deal with vascular access (shunt) problems through surgery, PTA, etc.

・Acute blood purification therapy

We provide acute blood purification therapy more than 800 times a year on a 24-hour basis to patients with acute renal failure and multiple organ failure that occur after surgery or trauma, as well as patients with drug poisoning, fulminant hepatitis, and hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Apheresis treatment

We provide apheresis treatment for various diseases caused by large molecular weight proteins that cannot be removed by hemodialysis.

・Kidney transplant

In cooperation with our hospital's Transplant Surgery, we provide inpatient and outpatient treatment for transplant-related complications and rejection reactions, and perform more than 20 living donor kidney transplants per year. For patients hoping to receive a kidney transplant, we register them with the Japan Kidney Transplant Network (Kanto-Koshinetsu Block) and accept tissue compatibility tests on an outpatient basis.

・Home (in-home) dialysis

Home dialysis is already covered by insurance. At our hospital, patients can receive training in home dialysis while visiting the hospital on weekends to suit their needs. Patients who start home dialysis at our hospital are pleased to report that they have been able to fully return to society and feel better.

・Peritoneal dialysis

A team including specialists provides medical care to outpatient peritoneal dialysis patients.
