Department of Genetics welcomes consultations regarding a variety of genetic issues. We address concerns and worries about genetics and genetic diseases, such as "I (or a family member) have been diagnosed with a hereditary disease," "I'm worried that my child will inherit my disease," and "I want to undergo genetic testing." Our team of doctors specializing in genetics, a certified genetic counselor, nurses, and a certified public psychologist provides personalized medical and psychological support. Rapid advances in molecular genetics have enabled many diseases to be elucidated at the genetic level, and this information is increasingly being applied to patients. We provide appropriate medical information to help our patients and their families understand and diagnose their own problems and lead better lives. Treatment details
Department of Genetics provides outpatient genetic counseling and cancer genome care.
Our genetic counseling clinic provides specialized information and collaborative solutions to problems faced by individuals diagnosed with hereditary disorders, their families, and those considering genetic testing or prenatal diagnosis. The clinic is staffed by physicians and other medical professionals (including certified genetic counselors, genetic nursing specialists, and certified psychologists). Each consultation typically lasts 30 minutes to an hour, therefore appointments are required.
Tokai University Hospital is a " Designated Hospitals for Cancer Genomic Medicine". Our department operates a "Cancer Genomics Outpatient Clinic" where we provide cancer gene panel tests, which is covered by insurance, to patients with solid tumors.
Our department provides genetic tests and related consultations, but does not provide treatment. If you would like a clinical diagnosis of a disease or ongoing medical care, please visit the department that deals with that disease.

<Genetic Counseling Clinic>
For hereditary neuromuscular disorders, pediatric diseases, hearing loss, and non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), outpatient clinics are staffed by clinicians specializing in each respective field. For other areas, there are no specialist physicians available, so please contact Department of Genetics in advance. -
<Cancer Genome Outpatient Clinic (Solid Cancer)>
The following people are eligible for insurance coverage:
1) Patients with solid cancer, cancer of unknown primary origin, or rare cancer for whom standard treatment has been completed or is expected to be completed
②Those whose PS remains at 0 or 1 approximately three months after the test results are known and who are able to receive chemotherapy
Main medical achievements
In fiscal year 2024, the total number of outpatient visits was 1,121 (899 in fiscal year 2023), with 472 new visits (420 in fiscal year 2023). The breakdown of visits was 47% for cancer genome panel testing, 22% for hereditary tumors, 18% for prenatal diagnosis consultations, 2% each for pediatrics, hearing loss, and neuromuscular diseases, and 6% for other reasons. The proportion of visits for cancer genome panel testing, which began in earnest in fiscal year 2020, further increased in fiscal year 2024, and the number of patients also increased. Furthermore, with the increase in genetic testing items for rare diseases covered by insurance, the number of patients in various fields (categorized as "other") also increased. While the trend of many patients coming from neighboring areas remained unchanged, there were also patients from outside the capital and prefectures.
