Under the theme of "efficient operating room management," Department of Anesthesiology at our hospital has been making major improvements to the operating room environment, such as standardizing operating rooms in a convertible manner, using a surgery management system, establishing a Perioperative Care Center, and employing surgery coordination nurses. We are trying to promote one-day surgeries by improving outpatient care, increase the number of surgeries, and shorten hospital stays. At the same time, our department is training young anesthesiologists who are well-versed in perioperative care, able to become a leader in crisis management and contribute significantly to medical safety in the hospital.

Treatment details
Our department of anesthesiology is responsible for anesthetic managements for a wide variety of surgical cases, including thoracic surgery such as lung cancer and esophageal cancer, cardiovascular surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass, catheter cardiovascular surgery by Cardiology, robotic-assisted surgery, MRI-guided craniotomy for brain tumors, pediatric surgery, and emergency surgeries, day or night, such as those for trauma and aortic dissection. We also frequently provide an anesthetic management to critically ill patients, and make a great efforts to reduce postoperative pain through epidural anesthesia and peripheral nerve blocks as possible. The central operating center occupies two-thirds of the third floor of the hospital building, and has 21 operating rooms including hybrid operating rooms and MRXOs and a total of 27 operating tables over the approximately 100m x 50m field. In addition, the operating room area has four anesthesia recovery rooms, and the adjacent Perioperative Care Center provides comprehensive perioperative care, including preoperative evaluation and postoperative pain management. All operating rooms have standardized specifications, allowing for convertible management so that every surgery can be performed in any room. Furthermore, our system eliminates the need to change clothes or shoes when entering and exiting the operating room area, improving work efficiency and enabling effective management of operating rooms. Two anesthesiologists always stay in the hospital, allowing for immediate response to emergency surgeries every-day and every-night.

We provide the anesthesia management required for surgeries and examinations performed in each department. We select the safest and most appropriate anesthesia method for each case. Our specialized surgical fields include Neurosurgery (brain tumors, cerebrovascular disorders), ophthalmology (strabismus, retinal diseases), Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (tympanic membrane, tympanic cavity, sinuses, larynx, pharyngeal diseases), Gastroenterological Surgery (esophageal, stomach, colon, liver, gallbladder, pancreatic diseases), breast and endocrine surgery (breast, thyroid diseases), Thoracic Surgery (lung, mediastinal diseases, pneumothorax), Cardiovascular Surgery (valve, coronary artery, aorta, peripheral vascular diseases), Cardiology (valve), Transplant Surgery, urology (kidney, bladder, prostate diseases), Plastic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery(spine, spinal cord diseases, trauma, degenerative diseases), Burn Surgery, and Critical Care Department. We provide comprehensive care for patients undergoing surgery in each of these fields.
Main medical achievements
Medical care of our department is provided by 12 staff members, 4 residents, and 8-12 clinical trainees, and the hospital boasts one of the highest case volumes among hospitals in Japan, with 13,519 surgeries (7,820 of which were managed by Department of Anesthesiology) planned for fiscal year 2023. The majority of staff members are certified by academic associations (6 Department of Anesthesiology instructors certified by the Japanese Society of Department of Anesthesiology, 9 Department of Anesthesiology certified by the Japanese Board of Specialists, 3 certified physicians, 1 cardiovascular anesthesiologist, 1 Japanese perioperative transesophageal echocardiographer, 1 specialist certified by the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine, and 1 instructor certified by the Japanese Society of Resuscitation), and they are responsible for surgical anesthesia, intensive care, outpatient care, ward rounds, educating young doctors, and conducting basic and clinical research on a daily basis.
