Greetings
Our neurology department treats approximately 700-750 inpatients annually, making us one of the leading neurology departments among university hospitals in Japan. Stroke accounts for approximately half of all inpatients, and we provide thrombolysis and endovascular therapy for hyperacute cerebral infarction 24/7. For patients with Parkinson’s disease, we offer not only oral medications but also advanced treatments such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), levodopa-carbidopa intestinal therapy (LCIG), and continuous subcutaneous infusion therapy (Vialev), aiming to improve functional outcomes for each individual patient. As a core hospital for the prefecture's Dementia Treatment Department, we collaborate with local medical institutions to provide dementia care. In addition to neurologists, we also have stroke specialists, endovascular neurologists, and headache specialists on staff, providing state-of-the-art treatment both domestically and internationally. In addition to the above, we also provide care for a variety of intractable neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis and genetic disorders, so please feel free to visit the Department of Neurology.

Treatment details
Stroke accounts for approximately half of all cases in our department. We provide comprehensive neurological care, from dynamic illnesses (acute conditions) such as acute cerebrovascular disorders to static illnesses (chronic conditions) such as degenerative and immune disorders and peripheral neuropathy. For cerebral infarction in particular, acute treatments such as intravenous rt-PA therapy and endovascular treatment in collaboration with Neurosurgery. We perform MRI, MR angiography, carotid artery and cardiac echocardiography, and Holter ECG in almost all cases, and transesophageal echocardiography as needed to select the appropriate treatment. For cryptogenic cerebral infarction, we implants loop recorder (Reveal LINQ) to actively search for the source of the embolism.
In addition to the latest drug treatments for Parkinson's disease, we have also introduced the latest treatments for refractory cases, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), levodopa-carbidopa enteral therapy (LCIG), and continuous subcutaneous infusion therapy (Vialev). For neuroimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica, specialists provide steroid pulse therapy as an acute treatment and various DMDs (disease-modifying drugs) to prevent relapse, including the latest medications. We also provide the latest antibody therapies developed in recent years for patients with autoimmune neurological disorders.
Regarding dementia, our hospital is the only core Dementia Treatment Department in the prefecture, and we cooperate with other dementia centers and local medical institutions. We also use PET scans to diagnose Alzheimer's disease, and have recently started antibody therapy for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in Alzheimer's disease.
In peripheral neuropathy, patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome and CIDP are actively treated with IVIg and maintenance, subcutaneous immunboglobulin (SCIG), and anti-FcRn antibody therapy.
In addition, for migraines, a detailed diagnosis is made by a headache specialist and treatment is provided using the latest CGRP-related antibody therapies, etc. When patients are transported by ambulance due to status epilepticus, if their state of consciousness is poor, they are placed under ICU care and undergo detailed tests such as EEG monitoring to provide appropriate treatment.
In addition, for infectious diseases such as meningitis, we perform diagnostic imaging and cerebrospinal fluid tests early, and we also provide treatment for rare diseases such as familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) using the latest nucleic acid medicines.
We actively conduct clinical trials for various diseases in order to provide the latest treatment techniques. In addition to the above, we also provide medical care to treat various intractable neurological diseases, including hereditary disorders, and genetic counseling is also provided by clinical geneticists.
Main target diseases
Our practice covers a wide range of neurological conditions, including cerebral infarction and transient ischemic attacks (TIA), cerebral hemorrhage, bacterial and viral meningitis, herpes encephalitis, neuroinfectious diseases such as prion diseases including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and spinocerebellar degeneration, dementia diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, demyelinating diseases (neuroimmune diseases) such as multiple sclerosis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), functional disorders such as epilepsy, hemifacial spasm, and headaches, peripheral neuropathy, myelopathy, ALS, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and CIDP, muscle diseases, rare diseases such as familial amyloidotic neuropathy, and general neurological conditions.

Photo: An illustrative case of a patient with acute cerebral infarction. The patient presented with complete right-sided hemiplegia and was transported to our hospital 33 minutes after onset. A diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) of the head on arrival revealed high signal intensity in the left basal ganglia, and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) revealed occlusion of a middle cerebral artery. Intravenous thrombolysis was initiated 45 minutes after arrival, and endovascular treatment was performed 78 minutes later, achieving complete recanalization 138 minutes after onset. Atrial fibrillation was detected after admission, leading to a diagnosis of cardiogenic cerebral embolism due to atrial fibrillation. A novel oral anticoagulant was prescribed, and the patient was discharged home two weeks later, able to walk independently. As described above, this case highlights the effectiveness of acute treatment with thrombolytic therapy and endovascular treatment.
