Center for Comprehensive Perinatal Medicine

Greetings

Pregnancy and childbirth are major events in a woman's life. Recently, there has been an increase in high-risk pregnancies and childbirths due to factors such as an increase in older women getting pregnant. It is also known that one in 200-300 women will experience heavy bleeding during childbirth, so it is important to approach childbirth with adequate medical care.

On the other hand, it is also difficult for the baby. The baby moves from the amniotic fluid-filled environment of the womb, which is over 37 degrees Celsius, to a cold environment filled with air, and some babies are unable to adapt to the sudden change in environment or become ill.

The period from 22 weeks of pregnancy to one week after birth, when various problems can occur for mother and baby, is called the perinatal period. During this period, related departments such as obstetrics, neonatology, Pediatric Surgery Critical Care Department Department of Anesthesiology, and diagnostic radiology, which performs endovascular treatment, must work together to provide comprehensive medical care for pregnant women and their babies.

Our center is equipped with the latest equipment and has established a system that makes full use of cutting-edge medical care.We work closely with other medical departments, such as internal medicine, to care for complications, and we play a central role in regional perinatal care by providing a safe and secure environment for pregnancy and childbirth and gentle care for newborns.

All of our staff are eager to do their best to help as many mothers as possible to hold healthy babies in their arms.

Director of Center for Comprehensive Perinatal Medicine
Hitoshi Ishimoto

Overview

Treatment details

Center for Comprehensive Perinatal Medicine are established in five locations throughout Kanagawa Prefecture, primarily at university hospitals, to provide perinatal care for high-risk mothers and babies. Our center was established on April 1, 2006, as the hub for perinatal care in the Kanagawa Prefecture Shonan Block (Isehara City, Hiratsuka City, Chigasaki City, Oiso Town, Ninomiya Town, Hadano City, Atsugi City, Aikawa Town, and Kiyokawa Village). We provide outpatient and inpatient care for high-risk pregnant women and newborns, and accept perinatal emergency transfers mainly from medical institutions within the block. Our obstetric inpatient wards include 9 maternal-fetal Intensive Care Unit (MFICU) beds for critically ill pregnant women, 32 posterior wards, and a neonatal unit. Our neonatal inpatient wards include 14 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) beds and 10 posterior wards (GCU). We strive to fulfill our responsibilities as a high-level medical facility in the region through close cooperation among relevant departments such as obstetrics, pediatrics neonatology, Pediatric Surgery, Department of Anesthesiology. We also offer a midwifery clinic, painless (or pain-reducing) childbirth (which we have been providing for over 30 years), preconception care (consultation and care before pregnancy), and follow-up care for discharged newborns at our developmental clinic, meeting a variety of needs related to pregnant women and newborns. In addition, our obstetrics department handles deliveries for all women who wish to give birth, even if their pregnancy is not high-risk, so please feel free to consult with us.

Main target diseases

Perinatal diseases of the mother, fetus, and newborn

Maternal illness

Preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, placenta previa, monochorionic twins, and various pregnancies with medical complications.

Neonatal diseases

In addition to treating premature and low birth weight infants, primarily very low birth weight infants, we also treat sick newborns with acute respiratory disorders requiring respiratory management, neonatal asphyxia, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, and other conditions, including digestive disorders, severe jaundice, various congenital abnormalities, some cardiovascular diseases (cases that can be managed medically), and Pediatric Surgery conditions such as gastrointestinal atresia. However, in cases where surgical treatment is required for cardiovascular or central nervous system diseases, we may refer patients to the appropriate specialized medical facility rather than our hospital.
