Greetings
What is plastic surgery? When you hear plastic surgery," what kind of medical specialty do you think it is? Many people may think of cosmetic surgery. Our plastic surgery strive to improve patients' quality of life and expedite their return to society through surgical rehabilitation aimed at restoring the function of deformed or missing tissues and facilitating their return to society. plastic surgery is generally divided into two specialties: "cosmetic surgery" and "reconstructive surgery." "Cosmetic surgery" treats body shape and skin conditions that, while not considered illnesses in themselves, significantly reduce a patient's quality of life. Reconstructive surgery, on the other hand, focuses on functional and morphological reconstruction and repair of deformities and defects, primarily of the body's exterior, soft and hard tissues, or parts of organs, caused by congenital or acquired surgical conditions. We plastic plastic surgery collaborate with various departments to help improve patients' quality of life and expedite their return to society.

Treatment details
plastic surgery primarily involves the reconstruction of morphological abnormalities (deformities) on the surface of the body through surgical techniques such as tissue transplantation, and in some cases, by simultaneously improving function, we provide treatment that promotes early social reintegration and adaptation for patients. There are a wide variety of illnesses treated in plastic surgery, but at our facility, staff with extensive training in plastic surgery form teams in their respective fields to treat this wide range of illnesses.
Main target diseases
Cleft lip and palate, severe craniofacial deformities associated with Crouzon's disease and Apert syndrome, craniosynostosis, microtia and auricular deformities, congenital anomalies of the hands and feet, jaw deformities, skin tumors (benign and malignant), birthmarks (birthmarks), hemangiomas, reconstruction after head and neck cancer and breast cancer surgery, burns, facial bone fractures, facial soft tissue injuries, facial nerve paralysis, scars and keloids, pressure ulcers, intractable ulcers, ptosis, cosmetic surgery
Main medical achievements
In 2022, the number of surgeries performed was 824 inpatient surgeries and 1,161 outpatient (same-day) surgeries. We are proud to have one of the highest surgical records among university hospitals nationwide.
Cleft lip and palate treatment (Akamatsu and Hanai)
We provide comprehensive treatment tailored to each patient's individual condition, working as a team with pediatrics, otolaryngologists, orthodontists, and speech-language-hearing therapists.
Treatment for craniofacial deformities (Akamatsu, Hanai, Tsunoda)
We perform maxillofacial osteotomy for jaw deformities, microtia surgery, skull and jaw lengthening surgery using a bone lengthening device for craniosynostosis and facial asymmetry, and maxillofacial prosthetic treatment using maxillofacial implants.
Breast reconstruction (Imagawa, Nemoto, Tsunoda)
We perform breast reconstruction surgery using autologous tissue after radical breast cancer surgery. We perform immediate reconstruction surgery at the same time as breast cancer resection, as well as second-stage reconstruction. Our department has been certified as an expander/implant facility since July 2013 and has been performing surgery since then.
Reconstructive surgery using microsurgery (free tissue transplantation) (Imagawa and Nemoto)
We cooperate with other departments to perform reconstruction after radical surgery for head and neck cancer, chest wall reconstruction, skull base reconstruction, treatment of osteomyelitis in the limbs, and coverage of exposed bone surfaces.
Facial trauma (Akamatsu and Tsunoda)
We treat facial soft tissue injuries and perform surgery on facial bone fractures, including those of the nasal bone, maxilla, mandible, cheekbone, and orbit. We perform a large number of facial fracture surgeries, approximately 70 cases per year.
Treatment of burns, post-traumatic scar contracture, and keloids
For fresh burns, we provide conservative treatment and skin grafts. For post-traumatic scar contracture, we perform scar formation surgery to improve function. For keloids, we provide conservative treatment with oral medications, topical medications, and local steroid injections, and surgical treatments are combined with radiation therapy to prevent recurrence.
Skin cancer
We perform radical excision and reconstructive surgery for skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and Paget's disease.
Skin laser treatment (Kono)
We provide treatments using the Q-switched ruby laser (for nevus spilus, nevus of Ota, ectopic Mongolian spots, and traumatic foreign body deposition: covered by insurance, for age spots: self-pay), pulsed dye laser (for simple hemangiomas, strawberry hemangiomas, and telangiectasia: covered by insurance), long-pulse alexandrite laser (for hair removal: self-pay), Nd-YAG laser (for age spots and tattoos: self-pay), and carbon dioxide laser (for moles, etc.: self-pay).For children and those with extensive treatment, we also provide same-day treatment under general anesthesia.
Lymphedema (root)
Many patients have undergone lymph node dissection as part of cancer treatment, and we perform lymphaticovenous anastomosis using supermicrosurgery (treating blood vessels smaller than 0.7 mm).
