Greetings
plastic surgery is a medical specialty that reconstructs and repairs abnormalities and disorders of the body's form and function through surgery. The range of conditions treated is diverse, including congenital anomalies, trauma, burns, tissue defects after tumor resection, and age-related changes. Emphasis is placed not only on improving appearance but also on restoring functions such as eating, speaking, and plastic surgery. As a university hospital, the Department of Plastic Surgery at Tokai University provides advanced acute care, offering a wide range of services including microsurgery for reconstructive surgery, head and neck/breast reconstruction, facial trauma, intractable wounds, congenital anomalies, scar and keloid treatment, and cosmetic surgery. Furthermore, we actively engage in advanced treatments such as laser therapy, regenerative medicine, and AI, integrating clinical practice, research, and education. Our mission is to provide optimal treatment from both a functional and aesthetic perspective, respecting each patient's background and wishes, aiming to improve their quality of life (QOL) and facilitate their early return to society. We collaborate with local medical institutions and provide high-quality plastic surgery surgery as a core facility in western Kanagawa Prefecture.

Treatment details
plastic surgery primarily involves the reconstruction of morphological abnormalities (deformities) on the surface of the body through surgical techniques such as tissue transplantation, and in some cases, by simultaneously improving function, we provide treatment that promotes early social reintegration and adaptation for patients. There are a wide variety of illnesses treated in plastic surgery, but at our facility, staff with extensive training in plastic surgery form teams in their respective fields to treat this wide range of illnesses.
Main target diseases
Cleft lip and palate, severe craniofacial deformities associated with Crouzon's disease and Apert syndrome, craniosynostosis, microtia and auricular deformities, congenital anomalies of the hands and feet, jaw deformities, skin tumors (benign and malignant), birthmarks (birthmarks), hemangiomas, reconstruction after head and neck cancer and breast cancer surgery, burns, facial bone fractures, facial soft tissue injuries, facial nerve paralysis, scars and keloids, pressure ulcers, intractable ulcers, ptosis, cosmetic surgery
Main medical achievements
In 2025, we performed 617 inpatient surgeries and 879 outpatient (day surgery) surgeries. This represents one of the highest surgical volumes among university hospitals nationwide.
Cleft lip/cleft palate treatment (Hawai)
We provide comprehensive care tailored to each patient's individual condition, working as a team with pediatrics, otolaryngologists, oral surgeons, orthodontists, and speech-language pathologists.
Treatment for craniofacial deformities (Hanai, Tsunoda, Morita)
We perform procedures such as maxillofacial osteotomy for jaw deformities, surgery for auricular deformities such as microtia, craniosynostosis and jawbone lengthening using bone lengthening devices for craniosynostosis and facial asymmetry, orbital implant surgery, and maxillofacial prosthetics (epithesis) using maxillofacial implants.
Breast reconstruction (Nemoto, Morita, Takeshita)
We perform breast reconstruction surgery using autologous tissue after radical breast cancer surgery. We perform immediate reconstruction surgery at the same time as breast cancer resection, as well as second-stage reconstruction. Our department has been certified as an expander/implant facility since July 2013 and has been performing surgery since then.
Reconstructive surgery using microsurgery (free tissue transplantation) (Nemoto/Morita)
We cooperate with other departments to perform reconstruction after radical surgery for head and neck cancer, chest wall reconstruction, skull base reconstruction, treatment of osteomyelitis in the limbs, and coverage of exposed bone surfaces.
Facial trauma (Hanai, Nemoto, Kakuta, Morita)
We treat facial soft tissue injuries and perform surgery for facial bone fractures, including those of the nasal bone, maxilla, mandible, cheekbone, and orbit. We perform a very large number of facial bone fracture surgeries, more than 70 cases per year.
Treatment of burns, post-traumatic scar contracture, and keloids
For fresh burns, we provide conservative treatment and skin grafts. For post-traumatic scar contracture, we perform scar formation surgery to improve function. For keloids, we provide conservative treatment with oral medications, topical medications, and local steroid injections, and surgical treatments are combined with radiation therapy to prevent recurrence.
Skin cancer
We perform radical excision and reconstructive surgery for skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and Paget's disease.
Skin laser treatment (Kono)
We offer treatments using Q-switched ruby lasers (for flat nevi, nevus of Ota, ectopic Mongolian spots, traumatic foreign body deposition: covered by insurance; for freckles and tattoos: self-pay), pulsed dye lasers (for simple hemangiomas, strawberry hemangiomas, telangiectasias: covered by insurance), long-pulsed alexandrite lasers (for hair removal: self-pay), and carbon dioxide lasers (for moles, etc.: self-pay).
Lymphedema (Nemoto/Morita)
Many patients have undergone lymph node dissection as part of cancer treatment, and we perform lymphaticovenous anastomosis using supermicrosurgery (treating blood vessels smaller than 0.7 mm).
