Greetings
Our goal as staff in the Department of General Internal Medicine is to be doctors who can provide daily medical care that is close to the patient and who can provide high-quality health management and preventive medicine in the community. We are generalists who excel in emergency medicine and can triage and respond appropriately to emergency illnesses. We are doctors who have broad knowledge in all fields and can provide medical care that takes into consideration not only physical and test findings but also mental and functional aspects. We are doctors who have a comprehensive perspective and can provide holistic, cross-organ medical care. All of us in the Department General Internal Medicine are working hard to become and develop such ideal doctors and to provide medical care. We hope to be of some help to the doctors in their medical practices and to their patients. We look forward to your continued support.
Chief of General Internal Medicine Medicine

Treatment details
Primary care, infectious diseases, and intensive care
The Department of General Internal Medicine primarily provides primary care, emergency care, and infectious diseases. Medical care at university hospitals requires a high level of expertise, and traditionally, specialized care has been provided by organ system. However, illnesses are systemic and often involve multiple organs. General Internal Medicine provides care for common diseases for which patients self-refer, undiagnosed illnesses referred by local physicians, nighttime emergency outpatient care, and secondary and tertiary emergency medical conditions for patients transported by ambulance. We also have an ICU team, comprised of staff trained in intensive care medicine. We primarily treat critically ill patients arriving by ambulance, patients with sudden changes in their condition within the hospital, and severely ill patients transferred from multiple hospitals. We also have a team specializing in infectious diseases, providing care for emerging infectious diseases such as HIV infection and consultations for hospitalized infectious disease cases.
Main target diseases
General internal medicine:
Diseases in which patients visit the hospital with symptoms such as fainting, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, chest and back pain, palpitations, headache, dizziness, fever, shock, acute abdominal pain, electrolyte abnormalities, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, sepsis, endocrine disorders, anemia, and DIC.
Internal medicine intensive care:
Shock, sepsis, multiple organ failure, severe pneumonia, respiratory failure, status asthmaticus, ARDS, severe heart failure, acute renal failure, metabolic disturbance, diabetic acidosis, severe electrolyte abnormalities, endocrine (adrenal, thyroid) crisis, etc.
Infectious diseases:
Emerging infectious diseases such as HIV infection, travel-related infectious diseases (diagnosis, treatment and prevention of travel-related infectious diseases), consultations on various infectious diseases
Main medical achievements
The number of hospitalized patients per year is approximately 338, of which 58% are infectious diseases such as sepsis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, soft tissue infections, and endocarditis, while 12% are respiratory diseases, and the rest are a wide variety of diseases such as circulatory diseases, kidney diseases, neurological diseases, endocrine and metabolic diseases, malignant diseases, blood diseases, and collagen diseases. In addition to patients admitted from the daytime outpatient department, we are responsible for frontline internal medicine primary care, including patients who visit the hospital at night or after-hours outpatient clinics or by ambulance.
In addition to treating general internal medicine diseases, Professor Ozawa Hideki is a cardiologist, Associate Professor Oki Masayuki is a hematologist, and Lecturer Yanagi Hidetaka and Assistant Professor Tsuda Ayumi are infectious disease specialists, and they provide ongoing medical care in their specialized fields. The intensive care team, consisting of intensive care specialists Lecturer Yanagi Hidetaka and Lecturer Manabe Saki, treats severe internal medicine diseases such as severe sepsis, shock, respiratory failure due to severe pneumonia, circulatory failure, and diabetic acidosis. We can also handle severe cases that are difficult to manage at general hospitals, so please refer them to us.
Lecturer Hidetaka Yanagi plays a central role in the treatment of infectious diseases. As a base hospital in the western Kanagawa region, we have seen many cases of emerging infectious diseases such as HIV infection. Please refer us if you are suffering from any infectious disease related disease, not limited to HIV infection.
