Greetings
Thank you very much for visiting our department's website.
There will be no changes to the doctors' staff this year, however, there will be a change in the schedules of Dr. Nogami and Dr. Taniguchi, who will be seeing patients on Thursdays and Fridays. Additionally, due to the retirement of our acupuncturist, the acupuncture outpatient clinic will be open four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday (on clinic days only)) with a part-time acupuncturist. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
We are constantly striving to provide medical care that combines the ancient Chinese medicine and acupuncture with modern Western medicine in the best possible way.Our greatest feature is that we do not just select Chinese medicine that matches the symptoms of an illness, but also comprehensively consider the underlying constitution and lifestyle habits to propose custom-made treatments tailored to each individual patient.
When it comes to herbal medicine, we not only use convenient extract preparations, but also actively incorporate treatments using decoctions that can be more easily adjusted to suit each individual's constitution. In addition, for acupuncture treatment, we provide traditional treatments centered on meridian therapy in a clean and safe environment, which can help alleviate pain and stiffness as well as improve a variety of symptoms.
Even symptoms that other medical institutions have deemed normal or have no treatment options can sometimes be improved by utilizing Oriental medicine. By utilizing the comprehensive facilities of the entire hospital and working closely with other highly specialized departments, we will support the health of our patients with the meticulous approach that only Department of Oriental Medicine can provide.
If you have any symptoms that are bothering you, please feel free to contact us.

Treatment details
Kampo medicine is a traditional Japanese medicine that was introduced to Japan from China approximately 1,500 years ago and has since developed in a unique way. Currently, in Japan, approximately 160 types of herbal medicines, 147 types of Kampo extract preparations, and one type of Kampo ointment preparation are available under health insurance.
At our hospital, we leverage the comprehensive capabilities of a university hospital to provide both cutting-edge modern medicine and specialized traditional Chinese medicine simultaneously, allowing us to contribute broadly to the health of many patients. Another significant feature of our hospital is the availability of specialized acupuncture treatment by licensed acupuncturists (on a self-pay basis). Currently, we see approximately 500 patients per month, with about 100 receiving acupuncture treatment. We primarily receive referrals from other departments within the hospital and from local medical institutions.
One of the major changes to the medical system in 2022 is the introduction of online medication guidance. Until now, many people were unable to receive treatment using decoctions because there was no pharmacy nearby that sold herbal medicines. With the introduction of online medication guidance, it has become possible to receive prescriptions by mail from distant pharmacies, making it easier to receive herbal treatment using decoctions. Some pharmacies are also offering packaging services that eliminate the hassle of decoctions. We are actively involved not only in herbal treatment using extract preparations, but also in herbal treatment using decoctions.
Main target diseases
Kampo medicine is based on the idea of the unity of mind and body, and treats a variety of mental and physical symptoms. Of course, modern medical diagnosis and evaluation are extremely important, so if necessary, we may conduct Western medical tests in our department or collaborate with specialists in other departments within the hospital. Kampo treatment is suitable for many illnesses in fields such as internal medicine, gynecology, otolaryngology, dermatology, plastic surgery, and psychiatry, so if you are suffering from symptoms that do not respond to modern medical treatment, please feel free to consult us.
Main medical achievements
In 2025, the total number of patients was 7,412, of which 137 were first-time patients receiving Kampo medicine, 6,114 were follow-up patients, and 1,116 received acupuncture and moxibustion. The most common source of first-time patients was referrals from other departments within our hospital, accounting for 52%. We receive many referrals from departments such as neurology, Rheumatology, Breast Surgery, otolaryngology, and General Internal Medicine medicine. In recent years, many patients have been seeking Kampo medicine in conjunction with standard treatments for malignant tumors to mitigate side effects, and we are working in collaboration with specialists in these departments to provide care. Other sources of referrals include 30% from other hospitals, 15% from family and friends, and 3% each from internet information such as our website and in-hospital brochures.
Other important points
All Chinese medicine treatments are covered by health insurance, but acupuncture treatments are not covered by health insurance and are paid for out of pocket.
