Clinical department/department

psychiatry

Greetings

A distinctive feature of our department is that we provide care for people of all ages through separate adult and child outpatient clinics. Because initial consultations require enough time for careful interviews and assessment, we operate by appointment only. As our hospital does not have a psychiatry ward, patients who need inpatient psychiatric treatment will be referred to affiliated hospitals. For hospitalized patients who need mental health support, our specialized teams—Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Palliative Care, and Emergency and Critical Care (ER) Psychiatry—work together to provide appropriate psychiatric care. We strive to apply our psychiatric expertise to support each patient’s recovery and overall well-being. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Greetings

A distinctive feature of our department is that we provide care for people of all ages through separate adult and child outpatient clinics.
Because initial consultations require enough time for careful interviews and assessment, we operate by appointment only.
As our hospital does not have a psychiatry ward, patients who need in psychiatric patient treatment will be referred to affiliated hospitals.
For hospitalized patients who need mental health support, our specialized teams—Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Palliative Care, and Emergency and Critical Care (ER) Psychiatry—work together to provide appropriate psychiatric care.
We strive to apply our psychiatric expertise to support each patient's recovery and overall well-being.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Kenji Yamamoto, MD

Treatment details

Our department is characterized by having a "child psychiatry" that deals with the mental health issues of child and adolescent patients, providing mental support to patients hospitalized in sterile rooms with blood disorders, having a palliative care team that treats cancer patients hospitalized in other departments at our hospital, and having a psychiatry palliative care outpatient clinic that provides psychotherapy and drug therapy to alleviate mental symptoms for cancer patients who visit other departments at our hospital and who are requested by their attending physician. Clinical activities are carried out by nine staff members, clinical assistants, clinical trainees, and graduate students, but the outpatient clinic is also staffed by part-time doctors.

Our hospital does not have a psychiatry ward, so it is difficult for us to treat patients who require inpatient treatment. We also do not provide psychiatry emergency care. We recommend that patients who require psychiatry emergency care, including those who are at risk of harming themselves or others, or patients with serious physical conditions, such as those who are underweight due to eating disorders, or those who suffer from repeated epileptic seizures, visit a medical institution with inpatient facilities directly. We recommend that patients with addictions, including alcohol addiction, who require specialized treatment visit a specialized medical institution.

Treatment details

Our department provides a wide range of psychiatric services with the following distinctive features:

  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry:
We provide specialized care for children and adolescents who are experiencing developmental, emotional, or behavioral problems.

  • Support for patients after suicide attempts:
At our Emergency and Critical Care Center, our panics actively provide mental health support for individuals who have attempted suicide or are in psychological crisis.

  • Psycho-oncology and palliative care:
Together with palliative care physicians, we offer psychological support for cancer patients hospitalized in other departments of our hospital.

  • Mental health care for perinatal and dementia patients:
We provide psychiatric evaluation and support for pregnant and postpartum women, as well as for patients with dementia, addressing mental health issues that accompany these medical conditions.

Clinical activities are carried out by nine full-time panics, along with clinical assistants, residents, graduate students, and part-time physicians who assist in outpatient care.
As our hospital does not have an inpatient psychiatry ward, we are unable to provide treatment for patients who require hospitalization.
We also do not provide emergency psychiatric services.
Patients who require urgent psychiatric intervention—such as those at risk of self-harm or harm to others, or those with serious physical conditions (for example, severe underweight due to eating disorders or recurrent epileptic seizures)—are advised to visit a medical institution with inpatient psychiatric facilities directly.
Patients with addiction disorders, including alcohol dependence, who need specialized care, are encouraged to seek treatment at a specialized addiction treatment center.

Main target diseases

We mainly treat schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, childhood neurodevelopmental disorders (traditional developmental disorders), dementia, somatoform disorders, sleep disorders, and adjustment disorders.

Main target diseases

We mainly provide diagnosis and treatment for the following conditions:

  • Schizophrenia

  • Mood disorders (such as depression and bipolar disorder)

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Neurodevelopmental disorders in children (such as autism spectrum disorder and ADHD)

  • Dementia and other organic mental disorders

  • Somatoform (psychosomatic) disorders

  • Sleep disorders

  • Adjustment disorders

Main medical achievements

Our department primarily treats common illnesses such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders, and medication is the primary treatment.

The child psychiatry primarily targets patients under the age of junior high school. General liaison and palliative care deals with the psychiatric symptoms of patients hospitalized in other departments at our hospital, as well as providing palliative care for cancer patients. The palliative care outpatient clinic is not located in psychiatry outpatient clinic, but in Department of Anesthesiology short-term inpatient surgery center. Target patients are cancer patients who are receiving treatment in other departments at our hospital and who have been requested by their primary physician at our hospital.

Of the patients transported to our hospital's emergency center, around 400 per year require the involvement of psychiatry for some reason. For this reason, approximately four psychiatry work as part of the ER team during the daytime shift at the emergency center. There is a licensed psychologist in the psychology room who is in charge of psychological testing in outpatient clinics and is also a member of the general liaison, palliative care, and ER teams.

Main medical achievements

Our department mainly treats common psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders.
Treatment is primarily based on medication, with combined psychotherapy as appropriate.
The Child Psychiatry Clinic provides care mainly for patients under junior high school age.
The Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Palliative Care teams support patients hospitalized in other departments, providing mental health care and emotional support for those receiving treatment for physical illnesses, including cancer.
The Palliative Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic is located within the Department of Anesthesiology Short-Stay Surgery Center, rather than the psychiatry outpatient area.
It serves cancer patients who are being treated in other departments at our hospital and who have been referred by their primary physician.
At our Emergency and Critical Care Center, approximately 400 patients per year require psychiatric consultation.
To address this, about four panics work as part of the ER team during the daytime shift.
In addition, a licensed psychologist provides psychological testing in the outpatient clinic and participates in the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Palliative Care, and ER teams.
