Greetings
Pediatrics is a medical specialty that treats all aspects of childhood, from the neonatal period to adolescence. We treat a wide range of conditions, from common childhood illnesses like bronchitis and pneumonia to chronic and intractable diseases that require specialized expertise. In regional medical care, we work closely with primary and secondary medical institutions in the western Kanagawa region to provide a tertiary medical institution. We also work closely with municipal governments in the area of maternal and child health. Designated by Kanagawa Prefecture as the Center for Comprehensive Perinatal Medicine, we serve as a core facility for neonatal care of high-risk newborns, premature infants, and low-birth-weight infants. Our outpatient clinic is staffed with specialized staff for specific disease-specific treatment teams (pediatric emergency medicine, perinatal and neonatal medicine, hematology/malignant tumors, cardiovascular system, renal and urinary tract, neurology, endocrinology/metabolism, respiratory system, allergy/immunology, and collagen diseases), so you can rest assured when visiting us.
Chief of pediatrics
Atsushi Uchiyama
Treatment details
We cover a wide range of childhood illnesses, from common acute illnesses to chronic or emergency conditions that require a high level of expertise. While we accept new patients every day in our general outpatient clinic, we also have specialized outpatient clinics with specialized staff assigned to each disease-specific clinical team (pediatric emergency medicine, perinatal medicine, hematology/malignant tumors, circulatory system, renal/urinary tract, neurology, endocrinology/metabolism, respiratory system, allergy/immunology, and collagen disease). Because of the many diseases that need to be treated in the pediatrics department, we maintain a system that allows for smooth medical exchange with other departments within the hospital, and in providing regional medical care, we strive to collaborate with primary and secondary medical institutions in the western parts of the Kanagawa Prefecture.
Pediatric emergency care
As the hospital is in a medical school affiliated with the Emergency Medical Center approved by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, it utilizes its extensive experience as a tertiary emergency response facility for children to provide cutting-edge pediatric emergency medical care in cooperation with holiday and night clinics and nearby core hospitals.
Perinatal and neonatal medicine
As of April 1, 2006, we were designated the Center for Comprehensive Perinatal Medicine. As a central facility in central and western Kanagawa Prefecture, we provide medical care for newborns who require intensive care, working in cooperation with the local medical community. Furthermore, for patients who require regular outpatient follow-up and treatment after discharge, we work with related medical departments to provide growth and development follow-up. We also provide one-month checkups and nutritional counseling for newborns, aiming to enhance maternal and child health in the region. Starting in April 2025, we will expand our neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to 14 beds, further enhancing our medical system to meet the needs of the local community.
Hematological and malignant tumor diseases
We diagnose and treat leukemia, childhood cancer, blood disorders, and other diseases. In collaboration with the Department of Cell Transplantation, we perform hematopoietic stem cell transplants not only for malignant diseases such as leukemia, but also for diseases such as aplastic anemia, congenital immunodeficiency, and congenital metabolic disorders, making us one of the top transplant facilities in Japan. We have provided in-hospital classes (elementary and junior high schools) for patients who are hospitalized for a long time.
Cardiovascular disease
We provide care for patients with congenital heart disease, primarily through the diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart disease by doctors trained at children's hospitals and other institutions, and we are also referred by many patients who have undergone surgery at other hospitals. In particular, we place emphasis on preventive medicine and are responsible for the annual heart checkups for almost all elementary and junior high schools in western Kanagawa Prefecture, as well as interpreting and diagnosing more than 20,000 electrocardiograms annually, and are also involved in community medical care.
Kidney/Urinary tract disease
We perform kidney biopsies as needed for kidney diseases such as nephritis and nephrotic syndrome, and decide on a treatment plan. We provide medical care for urinary tract infections and congenital kidney and urinary tract diseases in collaboration with the Pediatric Surgery and Urology departments. We provide medical care for patients who have been diagnosed with hydronephrosis in fetal or infant kidney ultrasounds, and for patients who have been diagnosed with hematuria or proteinuria in school urine tests. We also treat water and electrolyte abnormalities and high blood pressure.
Neurological disorders
As children continue to grow, it is important to monitor their mental and motor development, so we mainly diagnose and treat developmental delays, seizures, involuntary movements, etc. Head MRI and EEG tests can be performed early on the day of consultation. We also perform special tests such as MR angiography and cerebral blood flow scintigraphy (SPECT).
Endocrine and metabolic disorders
Specialists play a central role in the diagnosis and treatment of growth disorders, thyroid diseases, gonadal diseases, diabetes, etc. In addition, hematopoietic cell transplantation, which is a distinctive feature of our department, often results in endocrine disorders as late complications, so we also provide long-term follow-up in collaboration with Department of Cell Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine.
Respiratory disease
We provide medical care for congenital and acquired airway diseases using various imaging tests and respiratory function tests, and also focus on the diagnosis and treatment of intractable and recurrent respiratory infections.
Allergies and immune disorders
We provide outpatient and inpatient care for allergic diseases such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, and food allergies, which have been on the rise in recent years. Regarding asthma, we perform respiratory function tests and diagnostic imaging for children, as well as special tests such as airway hyperresponsiveness tests and measuring exhaled nitric oxide concentrations for airway inflammation. Regarding Food-protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, we perform food elimination tests and food challenge tests for diagnosis and treatment for children who are deemed to need them.
Collagen disease
We diagnose and treat pediatric rheumatic diseases, including juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), systemic lupus erythematosus, and mixed connective tissue disease. We aim to maintain a higher quality of life by providing early diagnosis and treatment so that children can continue to live their daily lives.
Main target diseases
Fetal and neonatal disorders
General neonatal diseases, including premature and low-birth-weight infants. Regarding congenital heart disease and neurosurgical disorders that require emergency surgical treatment, we will refer patients to other medical institutions because it is difficult to perform surgery at our hospital.
Regarding congenital heart disease that requires emergency surgical treatment, we refer patients to other medical institutions as surgery is difficult at our hospital.
