Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine

Greetings

Based on the philosophy and basic policy of Tokai University Hospital, Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine provides prompt, high-quality clinical testing, which is essential for providing high-quality, safe medical care to patients, and is engaged in medical care, education, and research support that utilizes the expertise of a university hospital.

There is an international standard for clinical testing called ISO15189 (Clinical laboratories - Particular requirements for quality and competence), a third-party assessment that assesses whether rapid, high-quality clinical testing is being provided. Tokai University Hospital has obtained ISO15189 certification and has built and operates a quality management system based on the requirements. Under this strict management system, we continue to make steady efforts every day together with Medical Technology Department to provide the best possible test results to doctors and patients.

As Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine at a university hospital, one of our important missions is to develop new clinical tests. As exemplified by the clinical testing of SARS-CoV-2, we hope to collaborate closely with clinical departments to keep up with the ever-changing medical situation, and to conduct research and development that can benefit not only our patients, but also medical staff, the local community, and the country. Starting in April 2025, we will be offering a new outpatient service for ultrasound examinations (regional slots: abdominal and superficial organs) Monday through Friday (from 2:00 p.m.).

Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine strives to provide reliable testing and diagnoses in cooperation with a variety of professions. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. We appreciate your cooperation.

Treatment details

Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine interprets the results of specimen and microbiological tests (blood, urine, biochemistry, immunology, bacteria, genetics, etc.) and physiological tests (abdominal ultrasound, cardiac ultrasound, superficial ultrasound, obstetric Obstetrics and Gynecology ultrasound, electrocardiogram, pulmonary function, electroencephalogram, etc.). In addition, we collaborate with the Department of Medical Technology Department (clinical laboratory technologists), who are primarily responsible for measurements, to ensure the accuracy and speed of testing, enhance pre-treatment testing and diagnostics, provide consultations, and implement infection control activities. We support safe, high-quality medical care and efficiency in each department, and also serve as a bridge between the "frontline of medical care" and the "frontline of testing." At Tokai University Hospital, many routine tests can be performed and diagnosed on the same day. For pre-treatment blood and biochemistry tests, accurate results are reported within 40 minutes. We provide 24-hour emergency response and emergency medical care. We also contribute to preventive medicine by providing tests to Health Screening Center. High-precision testing and diagnoses by specialized physicians are supported by accurate measurements performed by specialized clinical laboratory technologists. In addition to doctors specializing in testing, doctors from various medical departments also participate in the testing and diagnosis.

Main medical achievements

Infectious disease testing and diagnosis, infection consultation

Infectious disease testing and diagnosis includes the diagnosis of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDRP), intestinal infections such as O-157, febrile viral diseases such as measles, chickenpox, and rubella, and respiratory infections such as influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and tuberculosis. Rapid diagnosis is possible through the use of cutting-edge technologies such as nucleic acid amplification and immunoassay. Infection consultations are available from both inside and outside the hospital regarding matters related to testing and diagnosis, such as test selection, test planning, and result interpretation, as well as hospital infection control measures.

Ultrasound diagnosis

Ultrasound examinations are used to diagnose and assess diseases of upper abdominal organs such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen; urinary organs such as the kidneys and prostate; gynecological organs such as the uterus and ovaries; superficial organs such as the breast, thyroid, lymph nodes, and subcutaneous soft tissue; and circulatory system diseases such as the heart and blood vessels. They can also screen for gross lesions in the digestive tract, including the large intestine and stomach. Ultrasound examinations are performed primarily by certified ultrasound technicians, who utilize high-performance ultrasound diagnostic equipment to produce high-quality images. Blood flow measurements using Doppler mode and evaluation of liver stiffness are also possible. Reports are prepared in collaboration with ultrasound specialists and supervising physicians.

Hematological diagnosis

Blood diagnostics include the diagnosis of blood disorders such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukemia, malignant lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. For bone marrow tests and flow cytometry tests, a Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine doctor will prepare a final report based on the cell classification and measurements performed by the blood testing technician.
