Greetings
Approximately 70% of our oral surgery department's patients are referred by dentists and medical professionals, and we treat all oral surgical conditions, including stubborn stomatitis, oral cancer, inflammation that causes swelling of the lymph nodes in the gums, face, and neck, osteomyelitis that causes pain even after tooth extraction, and temporomandibular joint disorders that make it difficult to open the mouth. The role of hospital oral surgery is expanding for the following reasons: an increase in oral tumor patients, preoperative oral function management to reduce postoperative pneumonia, and tooth extractions for patients taking anticoagulants that thin the blood. We apologize for the increased waiting times for initial consultations at our hospital. We will continue to consider ways to improve our medical system, including eliminating waiting times.

Treatment details
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery diagnoses and treats a wide range of surgical and medical conditions, as it focuses on oral and perioral conditions. We practice team medicine, consulting with internal medicine, surgery, otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, plastic surgery, radiology, pediatrics, Department of Anesthesiology, Department of Rehabilitation, and other specialty departments as needed. In many cases, we ask the referring dentist to continue general dentistry, including pre- and postoperative procedures, prosthetics, and conservation. We also ask medical doctors to manage underlying diseases. We also cooperate with the doctors who referred the patient for follow-up. In cooperation with neighboring dental and medical associations, we strive to fulfill our role as an acute care hospital based on community cooperation and as a hospital with specific functions that provides advanced medical care.
Main target diseases
We treat diseases that manifest in and around the oral cavity, such as tooth extraction, inflammation, facial and oral trauma, glossodynia, temporomandibular joint disorder, cystic disease, jaw deformity, benign tumors, and malignant tumors. We also treat oral diseases that appear in association with systemic diseases, such as oral mucositis caused by chemotherapy, osteoporosis, and osteonecrosis of the jaw caused by bisphosphonates used to treat cancer bone metastasis.
Main medical achievements
The oral surgery department sees approximately 8,000 new patients annually, approximately 60% of whom are referred by dentists and physicians. Outpatient care includes tooth extractions, dental infections, trauma, temporomandibular joint disorders, oral mucosal disorders, neurological disorders, implant treatment, oral symptoms associated with systemic illnesses, and postoperative follow-up. Inpatient care includes approximately 450 patients annually, of which approximately 300 undergo general anesthesia surgery. The breakdown of general anesthesia surgery cases is malignant tumor surgery (42%), cyst/benign tumor surgery (37%), trauma (11%), jaw deformity (5%), and inflammatory diseases (5%). Inpatient care includes short-term inpatient surgery for tooth extractions and minor surgeries. In addition to standard outpatient surgery, our department offers short-term inpatient treatments using intravenous sedation to reduce patient anxiety and pain.
Our department treats approximately 100 patients annually with primary oral squamous cell carcinoma, one of the highest numbers in the country. Aiming to improve the quality of life for patients and their families, we develop treatment plans after obtaining fully informed consent. While surgical treatment is often selected in our department, we achieve both functional preservation and a cure by thoroughly preserving nerve function during surgery. For advanced cancers and recurrent cases referred from other hospitals, we perform extended resections, which are highly curative. We perform approximately 100 oral cancer surgeries annually, one-third of which involve immediate reconstructive surgery using free flaps. We actively provide treatments that preserve function, including occlusion, chewing, swallowing, speech, and articulation. Furthermore, by restoring both occlusion and chewing function, as well as the dentition and jawbone shape lost due to surgery or trauma, we aim to restore both functionality and aesthetics to patients and improve their quality of life.
